The staff at the Maravu was very helpful and attentive to us including Kara and Lavinia. We also were welcomed by Cali who played a nice song for us on his guitar. The bure we stayed in was very large and spacious with hardwood floors and the size of the individual rooms was great. Finally the towels there were nice and thick. Before commenting on the things there that did not go so well, I should state that when we were at the Maravu it was likely still in what I would describe as ”Covid Recovery Mode”. Also my wife and I are not 5 star hotel types in any way but we do expect that basic standards of cleanliness be in place. So if you're thinking about staying there you may want to follow-up on the concerns I've noted below. The bure we stayed in for 5 nights was filthy and so many places in it had fresh evidence of ants and spider webs. It was so dirty that we considered detail cleaning it ourselves with Lysol and a mop. However, we decided to ask the staff to clean it again. After they cleaned it, the room was still extremely dirty and the spider webs were still there. Because we could never get the bure to an acceptable state of cleanliness and the furniture was filthy, we searched in vain everyday for a clean place to set down our bags. Finally, the windows in our room were glass louvers and many of them were broken to a point where we couldn't close them completely. The main dining and lounge areas weren't clean either and had very limited gluten free options. As a result, we only ate there the first day and always ate somewhere else after that. When we arrived, we were also informed that the resort was generating their own electricity using a diesel generator and that they would be regularly turning off the power ever day we were there during the hours from 10AM to 4PM. This daily power shut off caused the temperature in our bure to soar and put our groceries in the refrigerator at risk of spoiling. However the most disappointing thing to us about these power outages was that we didn't know about this situation until we arrived and the fact that the resort staff told us that all resorts on the island shut of their generators at the same time they did everyday. We later found out this was false from tourists we met on Taveuni who were staying elsewhere. The resort also has a lot of grass in between the bures and they do not use lawn mowers to cut that grass quickly. Instead, 4-5 men walked around and cut the grass using gas powered string trimmers producing noise for 4-5 hours - something made worse by the daily power generator shutoff and the fact that we had to keep the windows open in the bure to keep it cooler. Finally, unfortunately like many resorts in Fiji, the Maravu does not have safes in the bure so we had to keep our valuables in a locked filing cabinet in the main office. Fortunately nothing was stolen but it was discouraging to have to carry our valuables around with us most of the time.

Garden Island Resort was a lovely place to stay while in Taveuni. It was clean, the staff were helpful & friendly (special mention to Angela and Teresa) and the rooms were quite nice. I got the warm and happy Bula from all staff and it was a very relaxing stay. The resort has a lovely pool with lounge chairs, hammocks etc, its own massage Bure & each room has a balcony. The rooms have no tv or wifi (only in the restaurant) and it’s sketchy at best, but I’m yet to find anywhere with good wifi in Fiji. There is a fan and air con in the room although even set at 16° it wasn’t cold and the room was quite stuffy. There are also doors connecting the neighbouring room which meant I heard all the banging, doors closing, phones ringing etc which occasionally woke me up, especially of a morning. The air con and fan kept switching off on my last night there. The staff tried to fix it straight away but when they couldn’t they moved me to a new room next door within the hour. Silver lining, the air con worked much better and there was no adjoining door which meant it was super quiet. I wanted to dive while here, but when I went to see the dive operator at the resort I honestly felt like I was a bit of a hassle being a somewhat inexperienced diver who hadn’t dived for a few years because of covid. The lady there wasn’t forthcoming with information - I had to pry it out of her - and when I’m a solo traveller with only 30 or so dives under my belt I wanted to be assured of everything including my safety. Another slight annoyance was the food as it was just ‘ok’ and they cost around 40FJD, which I thought was expensive for the quality I was getting, although the portions were a good amount. My meal on the last night was good though. There is nowhere really else to eat nearby (there’s a corner shop for snacks) so with set meals at set times I found this difficult. I had this at Beachcomber Is as well though so maybe set meals at set times is a Fijian thing?! On my last day I saw people had pizzas and asked about it. They said they had an all day menu and apologised for not telling me about it. This probably would’ve made all the difference. The pizzas were also much cheaper at around 10FJD. The staff catered for my food allergy which was great, but make sure you tell each person at each meal time. They also have free water refills at the bar to save you buying bottled water everyday. Breakfasts were much nicer than the other meals, which I was told on arrival were free. They gave me a bill for it at the end. There is fruit, muffins, juice and coffee available for free though so perhaps this is what they meant but it was not made clear. As a school teacher I asked one of the ladies to take me to a local school where I was able to see how the schooling system is and I gave them some free school supplies. This was a big highlight, a huge thank you to Angela and Josephine for taking me. On my last day, as my flight was later in the day they offered a late check out at

Don't waste your hard earned money at this place. The owners have lost total interest and therefore so have all staff members. You will see I very rarely write a bad review but felt it important to warn others about this resort so you don't have your holiday ruined like ours was. This was the first time we have ever considered moving to another hotel during our stay - we were so disappointed and sad by the service (or lack of) that we received. I don't know what has happened to this place since the excellent reviews from a few months ago but we were so upset that our 'luxury' Christmas trip spending our hard earned monies was here. There wasn't a guest staying at the resort that didn't agree with us. The list of issues is too long. The main things that you should know: Do not stay here if you have dietary requirements or allergies. We emailed in advance to inform them that I was vegetarian. When we arrived they acted as if they didn't know - our first meal was Christmas day evening meal - and all I could have was some grated carrots and lettuce. Nothing was made for me. The staff promised 'to make this up to us'. They did nothing of the sort. They continued to offer me meat and act surprised when I reminded them I was vegetarian. Worse than this they fed another guest fruit that she was allergic too and she had a terrible reaction. The next day they offered her the same fruit. Honestly, they are clueless. The owners have no interest in the enjoyment of the guests. In fact they spend each evening going around the guests tables complaining about their financial difficulties, staffing difficulties, water supply difficulties. It's not what you want to hear when on holiday. Not once did they ask how our holiday was. In fact not once did any staff member ask how our stay was. The service is non existent. We often had no towels in our room. At one point we had no toilet roll for 2 days despite asking multiple staff members. We had to take some from the restaurant toilet and then our fellow guests offered to share theirs with us. The hotel arranged trips are also a total rip off - just don't organise them through the resort. There are much better options. Don't let this review put you off the beautiful island of Taveuni though - just don't spend your money with this resort and you will have a great holiday!
