When my girlfriend and I got show the room that we where staying in. There was hair on the sheets, it was clear that the bedding had not been changed since the last guest. Then we looked at the shower and toilet in this hotel, can only be discribed as disgusting, clearly had not been cleaned. With toilet still having stains from the previous guests in it. It was clear that the room had not been cleaned, only the sheets had been made tidy with newish towels put down. The hotel manager offered for us to rebook the room, but moving forward me and my girlfriend will not stay in this hotel again.

DO NOT STAY HERE. We booked and selected pay on arrival - they took the money out of our account anyway. Then cancelled our booking 2 days before the trip. They have been impossible to get ahold of ever since. No reply to phone calls or emails. They have stolen over £150 from me. Do not trust this hotel.

Scam hotel!! Do not book. We clicked pay at hotel and they took the money months before hand anyway without telling us. They cancelled on us the day before the booking was meant to take place and then won’t answer any calls or emails from the provider regarding it. We’ve had to raise a dispute with the bank to get the money back. DO NOT BOOK

I would like to add some more info to my last review. Having contacted the Wheatsheaf 4 times I still haven't been contacted by the manager. Two different members of staff have told me that he only "pops in occasionally". The justification for the cost of the wine was that they don't sell house wine (which I asked for) but was given the most expensive wine that they sell at £28 without being informed of the price, despite the website saying all wines were £19. When asked why I was sold their most expensive wine I was told "I don't know" Could it be to fleece unsuspecting customers? I was also told that they know their website is out of date, & the manager had been texted about my issues.. Two different members of staff said they would/had texted him, so he not only ignored a customer but also 2 members of his own staff who he obviously doesn't trust to give refunds to customers. Finally one member of staff offered to refund me out of their own pocket & claim it back. This is unbelievable!!!!! Why should staff have to pay back customers out of their own pocket. I will not take their money as it isn't the small amount of money it is the principle involved of complaining & being ignored by the manager. Although the girls in the restaurant were very nice they are obviously woefully under trained or probably not trained at all as they seem unable to to put together a simple Correct bill. I wonder how many others have been overcharged by a small amount & haven't bothered to say anything. The manager is by their own admission absent most of the time & I suggest obviously doesn't care. Charter House & The Union Inn on the Island are also a part of this group so I will avoid them too. They also state that they are members of 4 business associations, which proves their commitment to their business & their customers. They are not members of 2 of them according to the websites of the associations & I have asked the other 2 associations if they are members.

I am not one for writing critical reviews, normally. However, I must make an exception in this case. We visited the bar of The Wheatsheaf shortly after it had opened on a Saturday lunchtime, early, as we have done many times before. We also returned later in the afternoon, after some shopping. I do have to report that the standards are dropping. Surely a staff member should check the toilets before opening? The gents toilet had a blocked and overflowing urinal, there was no paper in the cubicle and not even a lock on the door, should anyone have been foolish enough to spend any time in there. Clearly they had not been checked before opening. Later on in the afternoon, the toliet issues remained. Some establishments check their toliets regularly and record the times of the checks. Clearly this is not the case here. In addition, there was a group of 6-8 men sitting at a table, their language was unacceptable and they were completely oblivious to just how loud and obnoxious they were. Of course, they are allowed to enjoy themselves but there is a limit and enjoyment does not have to involve foul language. A member of on-duty staff was even joining in with their banter - staff should appreciate that there were other customers as well and they have a duty to all, not just a selected few. We will return, but please pay attention to these fundamental issues.

Room and bathroom very clean. Bed comfortable. Pleasant setting in traffic free square. Bus station close. Staff very efficient and friendly could not have been more pleasant. For a budget hotel I thought it was very good value. People these days seem to expect too much. Pay top dollar if you want your bed turned down and room service.

The double room was too small for one person, let alone a couple! To enter the bathroom, we had to move a bed against the door. To leave, we had to move bed against the bathroom door etc. - lots of moving the bed. No air-con, bed whites were all covered in smudges from the chimney. The owner was unhappy and not very helpful. Internet didn't work at all, which was not perfect to plan anything for the next day. Two stars are for breakfast and convenient location. Overall: disaster.

On arrival, loud groups of well oiled drinkers shouting in the bar area and being generally loud, lots of colourful language & topics being shouted about. Not great first impression for family with young child, but it's a pub and they can't control what their customers do. Collected key, went to room - very basic TV not working, but was cheap so we didn't expect the Ritz. Then the music started downstairs. Then the staff started loading the store room opposite with more shouting and swearing. We decided after 10 mins that it wasn't suitable so handed keys back to reception advising we wouldn't be staying and requested refund - which they said would be processed after the weekend. Contacted the following week after not hearing anything and was told aggressively (by whom I assume is the owner - shocking attitude) they wouldn't be refunding us a penny, they were a pub and we shouldn't have booked there. When I said I'd be leaving an honest review of my experience he went into one saying I was threatening them and they wouldn't speak to me again. I walked away with a bad taste in my mouth & well out of pocket, I suggest you do the same before you have the same experience as we did and many of their other clients having checked their other reviews. Id suggest he invests our non refunded £90 in customer service lessons. AVOID.

We stayed here for a week; check in the 4th and then out on the 11th So where to start, the first night we had a bed that was broken and upon inspection found they hadn’t cleaned underneath it due to the ANN SUMMERS LABEL that was left there, and we can only assume the reason for the broken bed😵‍💫, the following morning we informed them of the issue. The first thing we were asked is if we will pay for another room and followed by the manger conveniently being out of the country, We declined and the attitude became instantly that we have to talk to our provider as they cannot help us. We miraculously were moved rooms that evening into a bigger room which had also not been cleaned but at least the bed was fine. We had a few nice days till Thursday at which we were asked by the hostess that we were definitely checking out on the 10th to which we had a large discussion resulting in them saying they have a company occupying the hotel (booked after us I might add) which meant they couldn’t accommodate us and that we have talk to our provider again. The provider were very good to us and tried to get through to the manager with no avail, the hostess contacted us later that day with news from the manger who had apparently rentered the country that we will have to find somewhere else with a suggestion of staying down the road for £80. We decided we would just go home due to my partners anxiety being understandably affected by all this, we recieved a phone call from the hotel saying they’ve discussed with the provider that they have had a cancellation and can accommodate us… what are the chances right.. I told them we will not be staying there another night due to stress caused by the stay and going home as our holiday was feeling very deflated. I later received an email from the provide to confirm we had resolved our issues; he had messaged them and told them we had discussed the situation and rosolved the matter. I was furious that he thought he could treat us with us disrespect, *********** fought our case endearingly but he refused to even give us a refund for the first and second night only for the one we did not stay, I haven’t recieved anything yet and I doubt I will. That’s my story and I hope it makes you think about this hotel before you book it.
